Fascia is a thin, continuous web of tissue that surrounds and supports every structure in your body—muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and even your organs.
When fascia becomes restricted, it can limit an organ’s ability to move freely. Organs such as the uterus, bladder, kidneys, or stomach rely on subtle movement to function well. When that movement is restricted, the body may interpret the tension as pain elsewhere.
This is called referred pain, and it can show up in areas that seem unrelated to the organ itself.
Common Organ-Related Referral Patterns
Liver: right shoulder, trapezius, neck
Bladder: tailbone, upper hamstrings
Kidneys: low back, hips, outer thighs
Stomach: mid-back
If you’ve tried traditional physical therapy or other treatments and still experience lingering aches or pain, visceral treatment may be worth exploring.
How Visceral Treatment Works
Visceral therapy is a hands-on approach that focuses on improving mobility and reducing tension in the tissues surrounding your organs. At Breathe in Motion, our therapists are trained in this gentle technique.
The pressure used is intentionally light. Subtle input allows the nervous system to relax and encourages restricted tissues to release. Sessions often include guided breathing and specific home exercises to help maintain the improvements made during treatment.
If you’re curious whether visceral therapy could help address your symptoms, contact us to schedule an evaluation at our Brookfield or Mequon locations.
