Why Your Running Plan Should Be Built Around You

Introducing Performance Run Coaching at Breathe in Motion

There are plenty of running plans available online.

You can download a 5K plan, follow a half marathon schedule from an app, or find a marathon program that tells you exactly how many miles to run each week.

The problem is that those plans know absolutely nothing about you.

They don’t know your injury history, how your body responds when mileage increases, how much time you realistically have to train, whether you’re also strength training, or what happens when your Achilles starts talking to you three weeks into your race build.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce Performance Run Coaching at Breathe in Motion, a personalized coaching program designed by Doctors of Physical Therapy for runners who want to train smarter, perform better, and build a body that can handle the miles ahead.

Whether you’re training for your first race, chasing a new PR, or simply want more structure behind your running, your training plan should fit your body instead of forcing your body to fit a generic plan.

The Problem With One Size Fits All Running Plans

A traditional training plan might tell 100 runners to complete the exact same mileage, workouts, and progression each week, even though those 100 runners could have completely different training histories and goals.

One runner may be coming off an Achilles injury, while another is returning to consistent running after having a baby. Someone else may be preparing for their tenth marathon, while another runner is building toward their first half marathon.

Those runners shouldn’t necessarily be following the same plan.

At Breathe in Motion, we already work with runners throughout Brookfield, Mequon, Milwaukee, and the surrounding communities who come to us after their bodies have stopped tolerating their training. With Performance Run Coaching, we have an opportunity to work with runners before they reach that point.

Instead of waiting for an injury to derail your training, we can help you build a program around your individual needs from the beginning.

What Makes Performance Run Coaching Different?

The biggest difference is who’s behind your program.

Your run coach is also a Doctor of Physical Therapy, which means we’re looking at more than your pace and weekly mileage when we build and adjust your training.

We understand how running volume, strength, recovery, previous injuries, movement capacity, and training load all interact. If something starts bothering you during a training cycle, we can have a more informed conversation about what may need to change rather than automatically telling you to push through or stop running completely.

That fits perfectly with the approach we already use in our running physical therapy program.

Our goal isn’t just to get you through your next race. We want to help you become a runner who can continue training for years to come.

Your Training Evolves as You Do

Every Performance Run Coaching membership begins with a 55 minute initial consultation where we get to know you as a runner, and perform a gait analysis using Runeasi technology (if your consultation is in person).

We want to understand where you’ve been, where you are now, and where you want to go.

From there, your personalized running program is delivered through TrainHeroic, giving you a clear plan to follow throughout your training cycle. Monthly coaching check ins allow us to review how your training is progressing and make adjustments based on your performance, schedule, recovery, injuries, or changing goals.

Because real life doesn’t always follow a training calendar.

Maybe work gets busy and you miss several runs. Maybe your body isn’t recovering well after a mileage increase. Maybe you’re feeling incredible and ready for the next progression. Maybe an ache appears that makes us rethink the next few weeks.

Your program can change with you instead of leaving you to figure it out alone.

Running and Strength Should Work Together

For runners who want an even more comprehensive approach, our Tier 2 Performance Run Coaching Membership combines personalized running programming with individualized strength and stability training.

This is something we’re particularly excited about because strength training shouldn’t feel like a completely separate part of your running program.

The strength work you need during the early stages of a race build may look different from what makes sense during your highest mileage weeks. Your injury history, current strength, race distance, and individual needs should also influence what happens in the gym.

By programming your running and strength together, we can create a training plan where each piece supports the other.

The goal isn’t to add more exercise to your week just for the sake of doing more.

It’s to make the work you’re already doing more purposeful.

What Happens When Something Starts to Hurt?

Most runners will experience an ache or pain at some point during training, and how you respond in those early stages can make a huge difference.

Too often, runners choose between two extremes: pushing through everything until they physically can’t run anymore or stopping completely at the first sign of discomfort.

There is often a better option.

Because our Performance Run Coaching program is led by Doctors of Physical Therapy, we can look at your symptoms alongside your current training load and determine whether your program may need to be adjusted.

If an injury requires more attention, your coaching membership may be paused while you transition into physical therapy or personal training. Once you’re ready, we can help you work your way back into your running program with a clearer plan.

That connection between run coaching, running physical therapy, and strength training is one of the biggest advantages of having your entire performance team under one roof.

Who Is Performance Run Coaching For?

You don’t have to be an elite runner to benefit from a coach.

Maybe you’re signing up for your first 5K and have no idea where to begin. Maybe you’ve run several half marathons but keep getting injured during every training cycle. Maybe you’re ready to tackle a marathon, improve your race time, or finally become more consistent with your training.

Performance Run Coaching is for runners who want a plan that makes sense for their individual goals and a professional in their corner who can help them navigate everything that happens between the starting line of training and race day.

It’s also for runners who are thinking beyond one race.

Because finishing your next race is exciting, but being healthy enough to keep choosing the next challenge is even better.
