She Came to Us Hoping to Finish Her Next Half Marathon. We Had a Different Goal.
When she first walked into Breathe in Motion, she had one goal in mind.
She wanted to get through her next half marathon.
Like so many runners we meet, she had been dealing with pain in the front of her hip for months. It wasn’t severe enough to stop her from running, but it was there often enough that she’d started accepting it as part of training. She figured if she could just manage the discomfort until race day, she’d be fine.
But pain is rarely random.
As we watched her run and completed a full body assessment, the story became much clearer. Her hip wasn’t the real problem. It was simply the area working the hardest to compensate.
Her ankles weren’t moving the way they needed to. Her glutes weren’t contributing enough with each stride. Her core wasn’t providing the stability her body needed to efficiently absorb the thousands of impacts that come with distance running.
Her hip had been picking up the slack.
Instead of chasing the pain, we focused on building a body that could support the miles she wanted to run.
Over the next several weeks, we worked on improving ankle mobility, strengthening her glutes, building core stability, and refining her running mechanics. Little by little, her body started moving differently.
Her hip pain began to settle down.
Her stride felt smoother.
One day she laughed and said, “I can finally feel my glutes working after a run instead of my hips.”
That was a huge win.
Not because soreness in your glutes is the goal, but because it meant the right muscles were finally doing the job they’d been designed to do.
Then, just as training was ramping up, something changed.
She started noticing pain along her shin.
For many runners, this is where the story takes a different turn. They push through, hoping it will disappear after a day or two. Sometimes it does. Other times, it progresses into a stress fracture that sidelines them for weeks or even months.
Fortunately, we caught it early.
Her symptoms were showing the warning signs of a stress reaction, so instead of pushing harder, we adjusted the plan. We temporarily reduced her running volume, prioritized recovery, and continued building strength while allowing her body the time it needed to heal.
Taking a step back wasn’t giving up on her goal.
It was protecting it.
Today, she’s back to rebuilding her mileage with purpose. Her hip pain has resolved, her shin symptoms continue to improve, and she’s stronger than when she first walked through our doors. More importantly, she understands how her body moves and has the tools to keep running long after this next half marathon is over.
That’s always our goal at Breathe in Motion.
We don’t just want to help you finish your next race.
We want to help you build a body that can keep doing what you love for years to come.
If you’re dealing with hip pain, shin pain, or another running injury, don’t wait until it forces you to stop.
