Tips For Staying Healthy This Running Season

Spring has arrived in Wisconsin, which means it's time to kick off the outdoor running season! Here are some helpful tips to keep you healthy while running this season:

Tip 1: Gradually Increase your Mileage

-Avoid rushing into higher mileage. If you have not been running over the winter, take a few weeks to build up slowly to your old mileage. A sudden jump in mileage can lead to injuries. Make sure to have a plan to avoid injuries this season.

Tip 2: Schedule a Running Analysis

-Have you ever wondered if there are some ways to improve your running mechanics? Book an initial evaluation or running analysis with a doctor of physical therapy to help see if any adjustments could help you reduce pain and enhance your running technique.

Tip 3: Don’t Skip Strength Training

-Strength training is key to staying injury-free. Running puts a lot of stress on your joints, so it’s important to build strength to handle the impact. It also helps to prevent common running injuries, like stress fractures. We will soon be offering functional strength classes and Pilates prehab classes to help you to be a stronger, healthier runner.

Tip 4: Prioritize Body Care and Recovery

-Recovery is just as important as the miles you put in. Allow your body the time it needs to heal and rejuvenate. Here at Breathe in Motion, we offer many different forms of recovery. You can schedule monthly maintenance sessions with a doctor of physical therapy to help promote healing of muscles through cupping, needling, and tissue work. We will also guide rehab exercises to prevent injuries, and aid as a cheerleader on your health journey in those sessions. We also offer myofascial release sessions to promote blood flow, tissue remodeling, and relieve aches and pains. Plus, stay tuned for our upcoming group classes focused on yoga, mobility, and stretching.

Tip 5: Fuel Your Body Properly

-Running burns a lot of calories, so it is important to fuel your body with enough energy to sustain the activity. Focusing on protein is also important to help aid in recovery and build strength in muscles. Do not forget to stay hydrated as well!
