One Mom’s Journey Through Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum Recovery
When this mom first came to Breathe in Motion, she wasn’t in pain.
She wasn’t leaking, struggling with pelvic pressure, or wondering why her body didn’t feel like her own.
She was pregnant with her first baby and wanted to be proactive.
Like many women, she had heard that pelvic floor physical therapy was something you did after problems started. But she wondered if there was a way to prepare her body before birth instead of waiting until something felt wrong.
The answer was yes.
Preparing for Birth Is About More Than Stretching
Throughout her pregnancy, our focus wasn’t simply on getting her through the next few months. We wanted to help her body adapt to the incredible changes that pregnancy brings while preparing for labor, delivery, and recovery.
As her baby grew, we worked on maintaining strength, improving mobility, and teaching her how to manage pressure through her core and pelvic floor as her body changed. We addressed areas that were becoming tight, helped her stay active safely, and gave her strategies she could use throughout pregnancy to feel stronger and more comfortable.
As she entered her third trimester, our sessions shifted toward birth preparation.
We talked through labor positions, pushing mechanics, breathing strategies, and ways to help her pelvic floor lengthen and relax when the time came. Just as importantly, we discussed what recovery might look like after delivery so she knew that healing didn’t begin at six weeks postpartum. It started the moment her baby was born.
Birth Was Just One Chapter
She went on to have a vaginal delivery and welcomed a healthy baby into the world.
Like many new moms, she heard the familiar advice to “wait until six weeks” before returning to exercise.
While that recommendation has good intentions, it often leaves women believing they shouldn’t do anything for six weeks and then suddenly resume normal activity once they’re cleared by their provider.
The reality is much different.
Your six week postpartum appointment is designed to make sure you’re healing medically. It isn’t a test of whether your muscles, joints, core, or pelvic floor are fully prepared for running, lifting, jumping, or high intensity workouts.
Healing is a process, not a date on the calendar.
Recovery Didn’t Start at Six Weeks
When she returned to Breathe in Motion after delivery, we didn’t jump straight into workouts.
Instead, we met her exactly where she was.
We assessed how her body was healing after birth, how her breathing and core were reconnecting, how her pelvic floor was functioning, and how she was moving while caring for a newborn. We addressed normal postpartum changes while also helping her rebuild the strength, coordination, and confidence that pregnancy and delivery naturally challenge.
Every phase of recovery built on the one before it.
As her body became stronger, we gradually progressed her program so she could confidently return to lifting, higher impact exercise, and eventually running without rushing the process.
Because our goal was never to simply get her to six weeks.
Our goal was to help her build a body that would support her for years of motherhood.
A Preventative Approach Changes the Entire Experience
One of the biggest misconceptions about pelvic floor physical therapy is that it’s only necessary if you’re experiencing pain or leaking after having a baby.
We see it differently.
Preparing your body during pregnancy often makes postpartum recovery smoother because you’ve already learned how to coordinate your core, manage pressure, move efficiently, and understand what your body needs during one of the biggest physical transitions of your life.
When challenges do arise, they’re often easier to recognize and address early before they become long term frustrations.
Prevention isn’t about guaranteeing that nothing will happen.
It’s about giving your body the best possible foundation for whatever comes next.
Her Biggest Win Was Confidence
Today, she’s back to doing the activities she loves while caring for her growing family.
More importantly, she never felt like she had to figure postpartum recovery out on her own.
She understood what her body needed during pregnancy, knew how to support her recovery after birth, and returned to activity with a plan that matched her body’s healing instead of an arbitrary timeline.
That confidence is something every new mom deserves.
